Concept, Design strategy and Project Management for an old farmhouse in Tuscany, for use as a permanent Residence. The design integrates many different levels and spaces into a coherent Home. The House is naturally ventilated and cooled, in spite of the large areas of new glazing and windows, to make the most of the Tuscan landscape.

Natural coloured render throughout ties this House to the Landscape, the colours of brick and clay. All rooms have balconies, externally and internally over the triple height central volume. Natural ventilation is carefully managed to keep the house cool at the height of summer. Spaces are designed to give a variety of differing places for different times of the day: places for contemplation, privacy, socialising, different spaces to eat at various times of the day, depending on wind and sun.

A new house on a virgin plot, both found and built by JAA, carefully located and oriented to use the prevailing breezes and yet to anticipate hurricanes. 6months was spent studying the local weather and gaining knowledge of the site. The House can be made safe in one day, by one man, including protection to all glazing. As per the local vernacular the ground floor is of masonry and finished in stone, and the first floor in clap board siding. Thus the House is built from locally sourced materials in order to look like an Island Home. Large overhangs allow the house to remain open even when it rains, and shields the interiors well from the sun. The design included landscaping, entrance gates and full construction supervision.

Design and supervision was provided to extend and refurbish this existing Countryhouse with volumes and spaces to make the best drama from the strong sunlight, on a very dry site.

Under Construction, on a spectacular hillside plot overlooking the sea. The design includes four bedrooms, a Guest suite and infinity Pool, all taking advantage of the slope to achieve a modest appearance at Entry Level and increasing heights and spaces as you process further and further into the House, and down to the entertainment spaces. All materials are locally sourced.

A small two bedroom House with a shady timber deck, a Tower and top deck for views beyond to sea. The House is crafted in the local tradition with sustainable timber construction throughout. The landscaping is lush with a natural pond plunge pool treated like further spaces of the House.

The Restoration and extension of a traditional Island frame House, with careful adherence to the local byelaws and traditional construction methods. We were able to source a stock of old Dade County Pine to restore the House correctly. The design allowed for significant environmental issues such as high water table, annual flooding, termites, hurricanes etc

A long-time Family Home, our Client wanted his fine Arts and Crafts Residence to be completely restored, extended and refurbished to high standards. The Design balanced the original detailing and materials with a new palette of finishes. The renovation of the existing fabric was undertaken by craftsman. New access to the elegant landscaping and views onto the Heath opened the dark interiors; light has been allowed to flood the rooms. Completely automated control systems were included to make the most sophisticated of new Homes.

A new spacious three Bed Apartment Interior combining two adjacent units, using a rich palette of materials - natural stones, leather and suede walls, custom joinery and bespoke finishes. The design and layout follows the precise requirements of Client and family for their unique use of spaces

This interior reflects the eclectic style of a young film-maker, with unique joinery elements – a central pivoting Door, sand blasted Glass Screens, rich timbers, coloured glass and herring bone parquet.

In a protected Rear Garden, we obtained planning permission for a two bedroom Cottage incorporating passive solar techniques. The Cottage is partially buried, highly insulated, with a self-sustaining Green Roof which makes it invisible to its neighbours. The Cottage is a quiet retreat, and silent, surrounded by mature landscaping and cedar decks, yet light and airy with the large skylight.

A pied-à-terre for an International Banker, this project required a speedy fit-out and prompt handover. Double height spaces and open flowing interiors below a curved roof allows a varied and dramatic interior; all rooms gained access to the perimeter balconies.

A conversion and addition to a Listed Printing Works in Clerkenwell. The composition carefully leads from the Front Door through various periods and cellular spaces to the modern spaces beyond. Due to the ancient site, all new elements were suspended from the roof structure to avoid archaeological investigations and costly delays. The Main Staircase is of cast aluminium and lifted into place by two men. The double Fronted Georgian house was restored and the magnificent Shed designed as a significant entertainment space, with the latest AV installation.

A new House with full Basement off Portman Square replaces a small mews house. Complex Planning Permission and being located within the de Walden Estate required protracted negotiation which proved successful to achieve a substantial gain in floor space for our Client. The stepped profile and Tower elements reflect the local context, adjoining structures and massing in the Mews. The views outwards were carefully modelled to make the best of a cramped site. The naturally oiled exterior woodwork and through-colour render provides a low-maintenance solution.

Internal reconfiguration and an elegant wrap-around conservatory, a new Kitchen and Entertainment rooms, brings this Edwardian House to contemporary standards: all part of a major refurbishment of an Arts and Crafts House.

This traditional Mews House was gutted and all interiors newly constructed – an opportunity to squeeze the maximum spatial variety in a small space - triple height volumes, a transparent bridge and a large dramatic triangular Skylight, all produce a delightful surprise – and maximum day light.
